To the Top of Mt. Google

Of all the search engines in the world, there is one that is coveted more than any other, and the quest to getting to the top of that engine’s results page is similar to any noble quest: difficult, fraught with pitfalls, and full of adversaries. Everyone wants to be at the top of Google, but unfortunately not all of us are going to make it there.

By mastering the ways of SEO, you can increase your chances at attaining the top spot in Google, and in this we would be happy to give you a primer. It is actually not that difficult in concept, though it does require a bit of effort.

Keyword Selection

The first order of business is deciding which keywords relate most to your website, and discovering which of these are more often searched for by the denizens of the Internet. The keywords that match both of those criteria are the ones you should focus on and use more often. This is particularly true in the first few paragraphs of your page, as the Google spiders pay more attention to those the majority of the time. However, Google is a smart search engine, and does not like to be trifled with: over using those terms in a way that isn’t natural will cause Google to frown upon your site, and its page rank will fall because of it. Natural usage is key. If your title actually matches what is on your page, you rankings in this search engine will rise.

Meta Tags

Meta tags can also be useful to increasing your rank. Meta tag attribute “description” can influence click-through for people who see your page listed on the results page of Google, and pages with a higher click-through ultimately rise in rank, which Google interprets as the page being more relevant than those placed higher to people using those particular search terms. Recently Google announced that they are no longer paying any attention the “keywords” metatag, and as such you shouldn’t waste any of your precious time on it going forward.

Off Page Factors

There are ways to increase your Google rankings that are not directly tied to the page itself. Most of it is tied to inbound links, and you can increase these several ways, including having your site listed in directories, having other websites link to your page, and having your website linked in blog posts. This works particularly well if these links use keywords similar to what you have already focused on and used frequently on your website.

Everyone is gunning for it

Getting to the top of the Google results page can be a challenge when you consider that many other webmasters are also aware of these methods, and it is ultimately a case of doing it ‘better’ or more effectively. Needless to say, though: if you apply these methods your website will rank very high on the search engine of all search engines, Google.
