Of all the search engines in the world, there is one that is coveted more than any other, and the quest to getting to the top of that engine’s results page is similar to any noble quest: difficult, fraught with pitfalls, and full of adversaries. Everyone wants to be at the top of Google, but unfortunately not all of us are going to make it there.

By mastering the ways of SEO, you can increase your chances at attaining the top spot in Google, and in this we would be happy to give you a primer. It is actually not that difficult in concept, though it does require a bit of effort.

Keyword Selection

The first order of business is deciding which keywords relate most to your website, and discovering which of these are more often searched for by the denizens of the Internet. The keywords that match both of those criteria are the ones you should focus on and use more often. This is particularly true in the first few paragraphs of your page, as the Google spiders pay more attention to those the majority of the time. However, Google is a smart search engine, and does not like to be trifled with: over using those terms in a way that isn’t natural will cause Google to frown upon your site, and its page rank will fall because of it. Natural usage is key. If your title actually matches what is on your page, you rankings in this search engine will rise.

Meta Tags

Meta tags can also be useful to increasing your rank. Meta tag attribute “description” can influence click-through for people who see your page listed on the results page of Google, and pages with a higher click-through ultimately rise in rank, which Google interprets as the page being more relevant than those placed higher to people using those particular search terms. Recently Google announced that they are no longer paying any attention the “keywords” metatag, and as such you shouldn’t waste any of your precious time on it going forward.

Off Page Factors

There are ways to increase your Google rankings that are not directly tied to the page itself. Most of it is tied to inbound links, and you can increase these several ways, including having your site listed in directories, having other websites link to your page, and having your website linked in blog posts. This works particularly well if these links use keywords similar to what you have already focused on and used frequently on your website.

Everyone is gunning for it

Getting to the top of the Google results page can be a challenge when you consider that many other webmasters are also aware of these methods, and it is ultimately a case of doing it ‘better’ or more effectively. Needless to say, though: if you apply these methods your website will rank very high on the search engine of all search engines, Google.

When you search for something on the Internet using whichever search engine you prefer, the vast majority of the time you find what you are looking for really, really fast. You don’t have to dig through hundreds of pages of results looking for something remotely relevant. You won’t walk away mumbling to yourself about how hard it is to find information about why your car’s engine won’t run. You just type in your query, and the search engine immediately gives you a list of web pages about that topic. What sorcery is this?

While some of this magic is thanks to the wizardry of some talented people, most of it is actually due to the creators of these web pages writing relevant content in a way that boosts their search engine ranking. The criteria search engines use to determine a page’s search engine ranking are very simple.

Keyword Relevance

A web page about Italian restaurants in New York City is going to have the words “Italian,” “Restaurants” and “New York City” appear several times. When search engines scour the web for information (in this case, for information about fine dining in the Big Apple), they look for pages that have the exact terms you searched for. Higher priority is given to the title and the first couple of paragraphs, as any self-respecting webmaster would introduce his subject properly. How many times a given term appears on a page also affects its search engine ranking, with the pages appearing at the very top of the list usually having your search terms quite a number of times (We recommend 4-6 times depending on size of content).

Those are the first two bits of criteria a search engine uses the weight the relevance of a web page against any search. This is why you won’t get results about Chinese eateries in San Francisco or Mexican diners in New Orleans.

What else matters?

With most professional web designers out there completely aware of that, a multitude of pages are written specifically to boost their search engine ranking. With a lot of excellently written pages out there designed to attract as many viewers as possible, how do our magical search engines decide which are more relevant and therefore deserve a higher page rank?

The answer is “off the page” factors, which include things like how many other websites link to it, the words they use in the link, and click-through from the results list itself.

The Scoop on Free SEO Help

After much work and planning, you’ve finally launched your Web site. You hired the best writers, the best designers and photographers; you’ve tested all your links, your navigation bars, your roll-overs, hovers, take offs and landings. Your Webmaster may have been an egocentric geek who’d suffered the negative impact of too many ions to the brain, but he did a good job and you’re done with him. The site is published and looks pretty darn fantastic. It’s time for you to sit back and watch the money flood in, right? Wrong! Now is the time to actively participate in your Web site’s success, and search engine optimization is the biggest, most powerful and only tool you’ll need.

What is SEO?

SEO, not to be confused with SEM (search engine marketing) or RSS (really simple syndication) or HTML (hyper text markup language) or GUI (graphic user interface) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines (Google, Ask, Yahoo, etc.) via natural or un-paid search results. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. And that’s what you and your site want—a high volume of interested visitors.

To achieve this you can obtain lots of free SEO help. It’s not difficult to learn or understand, and you’d be amazed at how many books, articles and Web sites are dedicated to delivering free SEO help to you—the proud owner of the soon-to-be most popular Web site in cyberspace! Let’s begin with Google, the most powerful and by far most used search engine available. Nearly all SEO standards are built around Google’s super-secret SEO algorithm. And Google is extremely helpful in teaching you how to increase your page rank. Start with Google.com/support/webmaster. There are pages of useful information and tons of links to even more information.

Further free SEO help can be found at the following sites:
http://www.myseoarticle.blogspot.com
http://www.sitepoint.com
http://websitehelpers.com/seo/

Please be aware, this is just a smattering of what’s available to you via the Internet. There are also dozens of tutorials offering all the free SEO help you can handle. The Internet is a treasure-trove of search engine optimization tricks, tools, tutorials and more (try saying that three times fast!).

Books – a great source of information

And let’s not forget the old-school method of discovering free SEO help—books! Dozens of excellent books are awaiting your discovery at your local bookstore or library. There are far too many to list, but here are four great ones:

Search Engine Optimization For Dummies by Peter Kent
Search Engine Optimization: Your Visual Blueprint for Effective Internet Marketing by Kristopher B. Jones
Get to the Top on Google: Tips and Techniques to Get Your Site to the Top of the Search Engine Rankings — and Stay There by David Viney
SEO Made Simple: Strategies For Dominating The World’s Largest Search Engine by Mr. Michael H. Fleischner, Michael H. Fleischner, and Mr. Greg Wuttke

Start doing SEO!

There’s no reason for your Web site to have a low page rank. You’ve spent far too much time in its creation. Make sure it’s working for you, getting you the traffic you deserve, and earning you the money it was meant to. Free SEO help is everywhere. And anyone can learn it and incorporate it. You don’t need to hire an SEO expert, because now you can become one.

Time for an update on where things are with SEOsupporter. I have been really busy with my work at Just-Eat, and have unfortunately have little time over the last three weeks for work on SEOsupporter. But this weekend I finally found time to get cracking on some very important stuff that will help make the service better.

First off, I felt it was necessary to move the site to a more powerful webhost. The daily data updates are beginning to become substantial and I wanted to automate that part. I used Site5 for other projects and have been very satisfied with their hosting (if you want great hosting at a very low price – give them a try). So over the weekend I decided to do the move. It didn’t go as smooth as I had hoped, and it resulted in almost a day and a half of downtime. I’m sorry for that, but am glad to say that a lot more power is now behind the site and it means I can start adding more data-intense features.

Having the new hosting in place I spent two days on integrating competitor monitoring into the projects, and it has turned out great! It’s not done yet, but the basics are in place and I will keep working on it so you get maximum value out of it. Right now you can track up to three competitors and keep an eye on their rankings on all keywords you are tracking on a project, as well as the basic domain SEO data (pagerank, pages indexed, backlinks and Alexa rank). You setup the competitors under the “Competitors” tab in a project.

Oh and to finish off – a celebratory note. Yesterday we passed account number 100! So happy that people are liking the service and have had some great feedback from everyone. I will do my best to make sure the service and tools grows and becomes better and better. If you have suggestions or feedback on features, please let me know.

360 degree search optimization

Today there are quite a few companies outthere offering seo tools, and most of them are good – but not great. They focus on a specific area of search engine optimization and forget to encorporate a 360 degree approach when developing their service. It’s important to keep a holistic view of your seo efforts and not get too focused on one specific area of organic search. We help you get the full overview of everything related to your sites performance when it comes to organic search.

To get to the top of the search engines you need to have a varied and balanced optimization strategy in place. We can’t do that for you – but we can help you manage that strategy so that reach your goal. By creating projects in our management tool, you are able to control and oversee all the search related data that your site generates:

Key SEO data

Google PageRank

Backlinks

Keyword rankings

Pages indexed in the search engines

Alexa Rank

and more…

With the recent consolidation of the search engine market through the merger of the Bing and Yahoo search engines, Google has a more powerful competitor on their hands. It means that in most markets it’s now again worth spending some time on optimizing for these smaller engines. Even though Google almost has a monopoly in most markets, Bing (which will power both Bing.com and Yahoo search very soon) will still be big enough that you want to make sure you get some of that great converting traffic from them.

Only one new feature found it’s way to the interface today but that’s actually also a really nifty little one

All charts now remember your last view setting and will keep this the next time you view it. Again it was a suggestion from Søren Sprogø, and once again I have to thank him for a great suggestion!

Now I seriously need some much deserved sleep – see you tomorrow!
